Big Builders

Knex program

Pre-Schools: 4-6 year-olds
Average lesson duration: 45 minutes

e² Young Engineers believes in education through play. Our Big Builders unique alternative learning enrichment program introduces pre-school aged children to scientific concepts through hands-on experiential learning. We hope that establishing this connection between learning and fun at such a young age will set our participants up for future successful learning and creating.

Our Big Builders will construct 3D models using flexible parts. Students will receive kits complete with building tools and parts exclusively made by Young Engineers for our Big Builders program. These activities will gradually challenge participants in order to advance their fine and gross motor skills. This enrichment program will expose our builders to engineering terminology. In addition students will get be familiarized with simple concepts about the animal kingdom, larger principles of science and their everyday surroundings.

Through their play with co-builders, our young scholars will advance their interpersonal communication. They will gain confidence about his/her own ability to discover and invent.

Overview of Big Builders curriculum 

e2 Young Engineers’ strong core values surround the concept of education through play. We believe that lessons are learned and absorbed more easily through hands-on experiential learning. That is why our students will finish the Big Builders enrichment programing having a better understanding of everyday mathematic and scientific concepts.

Big Builders lessons include discussions about shapes, spatial recognition and moveable verse immovable parts. Our instructors use proper math and science terminology familiarizing students with more accurate language of the field. Builders learn simple addition and subtraction through building their models. Students will also discover basic principles of fractions as they learn the idea of parts of a whole.

We introduce laws of physics on a basic level through demonstrations of centrifugal force, gravity, torque, stability, friction, momentum, mechanical energy, balance, compaction and drive. Additionally, because many of our models have nature/animal themes, students will learn basic concepts of biology.

Bricks Challenge

Average lesson duration: 75 minutes

Using stories and simple demonstrations to spark imagination and critical thinking, Bricks Challenge is Young Engineers’ most popular enrichment program. With the use of LEGO® building blocks in conjunction with other tools and mechanical parts, our specially trained educators inspire youth participants while teaching theoretical and applied principles of science, technology, mechanical engineering and math (STEM). In addition our students develop their abilities for independent learning and improve their building skills.

Young Engineers’ Bricks Challenge enrichment program introduces elementary school age students to basic laws of physics and the necessary mathematic equations that coincide with those scientific calculations.

Young Engineers has specially designed a brief classroom style demonstration that is immediately followed by hands-on application through building Young Engineers LEGO® parts  models. Student participants of Bricks Challenge receive our LEGO® bricks kits exclusively made by Young Engineers for our programs. Each lesson is meant to inspire students to create, build and learn through a fun and entertaining LEGO® Challenge experience.

Overview of Bricks Challenge curriculum:

Young Engineers participating in Bricks Challenge can expect to finish the program having learned important theoretical and practical lessons. Bricks Challenge will introduce students to scientists and inventors such as Leonardo di Vinci, Sir Isaac Newton, Archimedes and more. Each of these important figures has played a significant role in the development of science and technology today and we use their stories’ to help inspire and educate our young engineers.

Bricks Challenge participants will gain knowledge of laws of physics such as centrifugal force, centripetal force, force of inertia, kinetic energy, potential energy, law of action-reaction, lift force, torque, leverage points, load distribution, force conservation, angular momentum and more. In addition students will learn the essential mathematic skills that go along with making the scientific calculations they will need in order to build their models.

Galileo Technic

Young Engineers LEGO Kit4th-8th grade
Average lesson duration: 75 minutes

Students participating in e² Young Engineers’ Galileo Technic advanced enrichment program will get hands on experience that will prepare them for their future the working in 21st century. Participants will be taught to use expert level engineering thinking, using math and physics to solve problems and build efficient machines. Using that professional engineering perspective students will learn to focus on identifying appropriate solutions for a given problem. In addition they will work in groups, promoting team building to construct complex mechanisms.

Galileo Technic provides an advanced level of thematic study, implementing mechanical engineering principles through building LEGO® bricks models. By analyzing physical, mathematical and technical aspects of a machine’s operation, students will implement the most efficient method for building their machine. Students study a certain topic; explore it from different angles and contexts while integrating the core processes frequently applied by engineers. Participants will graduate the Galileo Technic program with amazing newly learned skills in Science, Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects.

Overview of Galileo Technic curriculum

Galileo Technic curriculum builds upon the curriculum of Bricks Challenge. In addition to more advanced lessons of the introductory level math, physics and engineering of Bricks Challenge, Galileo Technic participants will be introduced to new engineering terms and principles.
Galileo Technic teaches engineering mechanisms such as: multi-channel transmission systems, mechanical coordination, the movement of a body on a rotational axis, center of gravity and fulcrum, different ratchet implementations, energy depletion, recycling, limited transmission belt implementations and more. Students build upon the math they learned in Bricks Challenge and will also learn principles of statics, understanding probability and chance.

Robo Bricks

4th-8th grade or graduates of
one of the Young Engineers mechanical engineering programs
Average lesson duration: 60/90 minutes

Using LEGO® parts and LEGO® WeDo graphic programming to build robots, Robo Bricks enrichment program participants learn software engineering, technology, entrepreneurship and math (STEM). During each lesson, students will assemble a robot that will preform a predetermined task. Constructing these robots will develop each student’s ability to create computer algorithms and capability to implement those computed codes.

Each student in Robo Bricks enrichment program will design a software and mechanical engineering project. Students will be critiqued by potential “investors” after they present their project proposals.  This enrichment program introduces its participants to many important professional skills that we hope they will later be able to employ in their careers.

Overview of Robo Bricks curriculum

e² Young Engineers believes teaching our students in such a way that each enrichment program builds upon previous programs’ curricula. We always encourage newcomers and reteach lessons to make sure all students are up to speed. Robo Bricks introduces participants to the world of robotics through lessons of mechanical engineering.

This enrichment program teaches practical software and mechanical engineering principles such as: algorithm planning, formulation of pseudo code, flow charts, We-Do Programming, input and output implementations, loops, multi-threads, keyboard operations, sensor applications, calculation commands.

Robo Bricks also introduces students to realistic professional skills and the world of entrepreneurship. We teach our participants about market study, product page, how Google works, Microsoft Power Point, rhetorical methods.

Robotic and Software Engineering (R&SE), course focuses on exploring the world of robotics from a professional engineering perspective. Special emphasis on programming solutions promotes the creation of sophisticated and accurate robots.  This encourages the comprehensive learning of science, technology, mechanical and software engineering, and math (STEM).

In order to provide a real life simulation of the complex engineering challenges that exist in the industry, R&SE enrichment program uses extensive teamwork and collaborative efforts. The program is modeled after university engineering curricula in order to prepare students for the industrial world. Participants will tackle engineering challenges similar to that of university courses and solve them by using the EV3 graphics programming.

Overview of Robotic and Software Engineering curriculum

e2 Young Engineers enrichment program teach in such a way that our instructors build upon previous programs’ curricula. We always encourage newcomers and reteach lessons to make sure all students are up to speed. R&SE develops a wide range of mechanical and software engineering skills.

In addition to lessons learned in our RoboLEGO program (please read RoboLEGO page for more information about its curriculum), in R&SE students will learn commands, conditions, loops, planning methods, dynamic programming, applied mathematics, and operators.

Statistical Overview

After extensive testing, it has been statistically proven that children participating in e² Young Engineers enrichment programs achieve high grades within all scientific subjects taught at school.

It has also been proven that elementary school students who join Young Engineers community obtain the mathematical knowledge required to succeed when tackling the more complex scientific curricula taught at middle and high schools.
